Desenzano del Garda is an Italian town in the province of Brescia, in the Lombardy region, located next to Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy with a perimeter of 144 km. Desenzano del Garda is 130 km from Milan and 28 km from Brescia, with a population of 26,862 inhabitants. Piazza Malvezzi is the main square of the city and dates back to the sixteenth century, designed by the architect Giulio Todeschini. It is dedicated to the memory of a local resident, Giuseppe Malvezzi, who was assassinated by the fascists on April 28, 1945, along with eight companions at Villa Fenaroli in Rezzato, which was then used as the headquarters of the German gendarmerie and a group of the Republican National Guard. The old port, built during the Republic of Venice, was historically used for the unloading of goods and services. Before a drawbridge and its subsequent Venetian-style bridge (with close Venetian blinds) were constructed, it was set to become one of the most photographed monuments in the city. In February 2016, the old port was surrounded by a modern-style walkway with 150 galvanized and 600 threaded bars. This work was done to facilitate access to moored boats, but it led to criticism and controversy among many residents of Desenzano.
